The AS-ITc project is underway. Satellite and Terrestrial Technologies for the Digitized Mobile Construction Site
The Advanced System IoT by Construction (AS-ITc) project marks an important step towards the digitization of construction sites, integrating satellite and terrestrial technologies to improve operational management, safety and efficiency. This ambitious project, supported by the European Space Agency (ESA), sees the participation of strategic partners such as TIM Enterprise, Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI), Eagleprojects S.p.A., Consorzio Interuniversitario Nitel, RadioLabs and ADPM Drones, each with a key role in the development and implementation of the solution.
AS-ITc Project Technologies
- Advanced Communication and Hybrid Connectivity
Thanks to the combination of 5G, 4G and satellite networks (GEO and LEO), the project guarantees connectivity even in remote areas. The developed platform allows:
- Real-time monitoring of construction site activities.
- Transmission of critical data through a reliable and resilient network.
- Advanced bandwidth management thanks to the TPZ IoT AIR100 communication box, designed by ADPM Drones for another project, which acts as a connected hub for IoT sensors and devices in the field.
- Digital Twin and Augmented Reality
A focal point of the project is the creation of a Digital Twin, a virtual replica of the construction site, which integrates:
- Copernicus satellite data, including 3D models and high-resolution images.
- LIDAR scans and orthophotos acquired by drones.
- IoT sensors to monitor traffic, environmental conditions, and structures.
Through augmented reality platforms, operators can interact with the digital construction site, improving operational decisions and safety.
- RobotDog and Advanced Security
Robotic technology plays a crucial role thanks to RobotDog, equipped with cameras and LIDAR sensors. This system:
- Updates the 3D models of the construction site in real time.
- Provides video streaming for surveillance.
- Improves the safety of field operators.
- Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS)
The solution integrates C-ITS services for traffic management in the vicinity of the construction site. These systems send real-time alerts to drivers, improving road safety and reducing inconvenience.
Impact and Benefits
The AS-ITc project brings a number of significant benefits to modern construction sites and surrounding communities:
- Increased operational efficiency: Advanced connectivity and digital twin optimize processes, reducing time and cost.
- Improved safety: Real-time monitoring protects operators and prevents accidents.
- Sustainability: The use of digital technologies reduces environmental impact and promotes a more responsible use of resources.
- Innovation at the service of infrastructure: The integration of satellite technologies, IoT and blockchain ensures transparency and traceability of data, essential for decisions based on reliable data.
A New Model for the Construction Sites of the Future
